On loosing a dear and near one

We humans are mortals. We are born, we live, eat, grow, work, and then die. It is but natural. We know we will die but somehow we prefer to ignore this reality.  It is only after we loose a near and dear one that we realize that death is so much a reality. And that there is no escaping it. It is just a matter of time when I and you will be no more. And that people will remember us they way we remember or mention those who have passed away before our very eyes. We are mortals yet we refuse to believe that we are.

How to read Urdu SMS on an Android phone

One of the things I don’t like about Android phones is their inability to show Urdu or Arabic fonts. This becomes really annoying when one has to read an SMS sent in Urdu or even Arabic. Although I am hooked to Android smartphones since last two years, but I just do not like this shortcoming. There is good news for all those who want at least to read Urdu or Arabic SMS on an Android smartphone.

I quit smoking today

Yes, I did that today, I quit smoking for good. I kicked that butt for good. I am not going to smoke anymore. It was epiphany I guess that led me to it. I have given up smoking a dozen or more times in the past three years. But I just could not give it up. But you know, the good thing is that I did not give up on giving up. So I decided to blog about it. I didn’t mind the money spent on smoking, I didn’t mind ruining my health nor the smell of it. It was a few encouraging words from a nice friend that led me to quit smoking. But now I am happy, I will not waste anymore money, I won’t smell as bad as an ashtray and I won’t suffer from lung diseases. If you are reading this and you are a smoker please consider giving it up. It simply isn’t worth it. You will live longer, you will be healthy and you die happy. Here’s a photo of the crumpled cigarette pack that I threw in the dust bin early morning, today. Best wishes.

Qibla Compass for Android

Qibla Compass fro Android is a useful app for finding direction of the Qibla shot_000001 from just about anywhere in the world. It is a small nifty app designed for Android 1.5 and up. Qibla compass is free to download and use, it takes up just 184 kb of space on an Android smartphone. The app uses an Android smartphone’s built in GPS to find own location and then based on that gives the direction of Qibla by pointing the compass needle in that direction. You just have to run the app and place it on a flat surface away from ferrous objects, and with in minutes it gives you the direction of Qibla. Not only that it automatically calculates the prayer times for your location and displays them in a separate tab. It also calculates the distance to Holy City of Mecca and displays it.

India’s Republic Day celebrated by Finnair Flight

Finnair is Finnish airline with a huge fleet of modern aircrafts. It flies to over 63 destinations worldwide. I believe it’s a very customer oriented airline as is evident by their slogan “Designed for You.”. I came along a very beautiful video on YouTube in which a Finnair flight crew celebrated India’s Republic Day on 26 January in a most beautiful and awesome way, to the surprise of all passengers. I have watched this video a dozen times, have shown it to friends, family and am now blogging about it. What a beautiful way of celebrating and congratulating someone on their National Day. Please see the video and enjoy.

Pakistan is at odds with the Taliban since last few years. Discordant views

“Sher Khan” was all he replied, shyly when I asked the lad his name. He was selling balloons in the rain, near PDA market in Hayatabad, Peshawar. His attire was different than most of the boys and girls loitering about in the area, selling balloons or just begging for a few rupees. He wore jeans, shirt, jacket and sneakers, and was using a polyethylene sheet as a raincoat. The boy must have been 9 or 10 years old. Sher Khan begged me to buy a balloon from him, which I did and paid him much more than what he asking for. He was happy and smiled at me followed by a “Thank You”. What saddened me was not his appearance, dress or anything else, rather that he was selling balloons in such rough weather. I asked him for a photo and he readily agreed.
