Baikal MP-442 (Makarov) a very good concealed carry weapon

Baikal MP442

Baikal MP-442 is a small pistol manufactured by Baikal which is a successor of the legendary Makarov PM pistol which has remained the official side arm of Russian and Warsaw Pact countries. The Baikal MP-442 is small in size, light weight, accurate and reliable handgun. It is my preferred choice for concealed carry, because of a number of advantages over other weapons.

The Baikal MP-442 (Makarov) has following specs:

  • Caliber: 9 x 18
  • Dimensions: 165x127x34 mm, 6.5” x 5” x 1.3”
  • Weight: 780 grams (Unloaded)
  • Magazine Capacity: 12 rounds
  • Sights: Front (fixed) and Rear (Adjustable)
  • Barrel Length: 93.5 mm, 3.6 inches
  • Single Action (SA)/ Double Action (DA)

So you see it is a small weapon with good capacity. Also as it is based on the Makarov PM design so it is reliable and accurate as well. The slide as well as frame is made up of steel so it is quite robust. The firing pin is free floating and hence does not have firing pin spring or block. The grip is made of plastic and is quite thick as compared to the original Makarov PM pistol. But that is because the MP-442 has a double stack magazine with 12 shot capacity as against the original Makarov PM which has a 7 shot capacity. The over all bluing and finish is satisfactory since it is an adequately priced weapon.

It is very easy to dis-assemble the MP-442

The MP-442 has safety which does three things, it blocks the firing pin, it blocks the hammer as well as de-cocks the gun. Also the magazine release is near the thumb so it is quite convenient, unlike the original Makarov PM which had its mag release at the magazine base.

It also has loaded chamber indicator.

A view of the sights which I think is ok for a CCW.

The magazine is a unique design. It is single stack at the top (5 rounds) and double stack for the bottom (7 rounds). So it employs two springs.

It is a pretty accurate weapon. I shot this target from 15 M, standing, both hands, deliberate fire.

I think Baikal MP-442 is a very good choice for a Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW). It is inexpensive, reliable, robust and accurate. It has all the the qualities one needs in a good weapon. It can be easily carried in an IWB, waist band or shoulder holster. In Pakistan it is available from Rs 35,000 to 40,000.

  1. Bro, I have the same weapon and I love it!! Can you please tell me where did you buy the grip from? and cost?
Btw, I have also painted GLOW in the DARK paint on the sights!!!

    1. Hi,
the grip is universal Hogue grip. You can find it in Lahore or karachi for around Rs 2500. I love this weapon too. 🙂

    1. I bought it from Peshawar. Fakhr -e Alam and sons. The guy’s name is Mazhar Alam. I am not sure if the 12 shot version is still available. But I bought a 7 shot few months back for a friend for Rs. 35 K form same dealer. His shop is located on main GT Road when you enter Peshawar, just a kilometer short of Qila Balahissar on the left side (after the bridge). Please note his number 0912217456, and 03018880886.

    1. If it Baikal MP 442, it has a 12 round magazine. The lower portion has double stack holding 7 rounds and the upper portion has single stack holding 5 rounds. Both have different springs. I suspect something wrong with your magazine spring, maybe its not sitting properly. Try to disassemble and assemble again. Also please check if its rusted or is rust free. Hope this helps, Cheers

“Si es Baikal MP 442, tiene una revista de 12 rondas. La porción inferior tiene una pila doble con 7 rondas y la porción superior tiene una pila simple con 5 rondas. Ambos tienen resortes diferentes. Sospecho que algo anda mal con tu resorte de la revista, tal vez no está sentado correctamente. Intente desmontar y armar de nuevo. Además, compruebe si está oxidado o sin óxido. Espero que esto ayude, Saludos” Google translation:-)

    1. It is an excellent weapon. Time tested, reliable, reasonably accurate, compact size, robust, inexpensive, and best of all ammo is also inexpensive.
